Mood Boards: Photos, Type, and Colors

Images are an integral part of design because they play a vital role in conveying a message or an emotion to the viewer. They are a powerful tool to capture the attention of the audience and create an immediate impact. Images have the ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple and effective way, making them a valuable asset in design. By incorporating images, designers can enhance the visual appeal of their work, establish a unique style, and create a memorable experience for the viewer. Images can also help establish brand identity and improve user engagement.

This week, we read about and practiced using photography, type, and color to create a “mood” and designing with photography by creating a tri-fold brochure. I chose Yankee Candle as my business for the following assignments — photography mood boards and tri-fold brochure. For the mood boards, I tried to create three different boards that represented the “moods” or feelings of love, warmness or coziness, calmness or tranquility. The following mood boards for love and warmth are presented below:

As you can see, I used photos that included the following colors — purple, pink, and red to try and create a love-like mood. The images used all incorporate candles and many also include flowers which many people use or give to another person to show their love or appreciation for them. For the board representing a warm or cozy mood, I used photos that included fall colors like orange, red, yellow, and brown. The images, which contain candles and scenery that depict the fall season like the use of pumpkins, and this fall color palette help to create a sense of warmth and coziness. From here, I picked one of my photography mood boards and designed a tri-fold brochure. By creating a mood board first and finding images that created a specific mood and inspired a color palette, I was able to design a brochure in a more efficient manner.

In the end, the creation of mood boards and the use of photography in design are essential tools for achieving effective visual communication. By carefully curating a collection of images that reflect a desired mood or emotion, designers can establish a clear direction for their creative process and communicate their vision to others. The use of images in design not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your work but also help establish a brand identity, making it more memorable and engaging for viewers.
