Telling An Artist’s Story

In this module, we reflected on our learning experience and overall progression as a multimedia creator. We also continued to practice filming and learned to incorporate b-roll, master proper J and L cuts, 3-point lighting, and record proper audio to support a video story.

Reading and Writing

Overall, I found the learning experience to be very technical and thoroughly informative. The clear organization and structure of the online course on Blackboard was particularly useful, like knowing what we had to go through and complete each week. At the start, my skillset included very basic audio skills and a moderate understanding of video editing. However, the course showed me just how much I could learn and improve upon in audio and video design. While every aspect of the course was beneficial, the scavenger hunt exercise stood out as the most useful because the hands-on application through photography enhanced my understanding of the visual composition guidelines. Overall, I feel more confident in my audio editing techniques, handling video equipment on a tripod, and other related skills.

The most challenging aspect for me has always been the technicality of design and development work like audio and video production. With our online environment, the nature of working and filming with my camera and tripod by myself was both valuable and difficult at times. In contrast to previous group projects, this experience demanded self-reliance and a heightened sense of responsibility. One invaluable lesson that will stay with me is the importance of investing time into the pre-production planning phase. I think that many of us are always tempted to dive straight into the practical aspects of production, but this course emphasized the necessity of a well-thought-out plan. This meticulous approach is crucial, especially in filmmaking, where a structured plan becomes a guide for the technical complexities.

In general, I think it would be interesting to delve deeper into continuity in film and video. I understand the concepts and techniques, but the practical aspect of continuity editing proved to be overwhelming at the time. In the end, this course has been a dynamic learning experience that has not only expanded my skillset but has also instilled the importance of careful planning in the multifaceted world of audio, film, and video production.

Research to Inform

J and L cuts are editing techniques employed in post-production that have the power to elevate the impact of a moment or scene in filmmaking. When executed with precision, these techniques contribute to seamless transitions, establishing connections between different moments in time and enhancing the overall narrative flow. The following examples from the television series “Lost” illustrate how adept use of J and L cuts can enrich storytelling.

This scene from the pilot of “Lost” shows Charlie in the present day, on the island, and then him in the past, on the plane. The J-cut is applied as the audio of the tapping sound on the plane seat in the next scene starts before the corresponding video transition. This technique smoothly connects the present day scene on the island with the flashback scene on the plane, creating continuity through audio and enhancing the viewer’s engagement by providing a seamless link between the two moments in time. It’s a clever use of editing to establish connections and maintain a narrative flow across different timelines.

The ending scene from “The Constant” in “Lost” is an example of effective storytelling and the use of audio continuity. In this scene, an L-cut is used where the audio from the present scene (Desmond calling Penny on the boat) extends into the next sequence, a scene from the past that maintains the audio continuity of the ringing phone. This technique serves to connect the two time periods seamlessly, emphasizing Desmond’s emotional journey and his desperation to establish a connection with his “constant,” Penny. The juxtaposition of past and present, along with the persistent ringing of the phone, creates a sense of tension and anticipation for both the character and the audience.
